309 Unit Plan

Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 5 - Instructional Delivery – The competent teacher differentiates instruction by using a variety of strategies that support critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous growth and learning. This teacher understands that the classroom is a dynamic environment requiring ongoing modification of instruction to enhance learning for each student.

Description: A unit plan created for use during student teaching and adjusted from a third-grade unit plan to a high-school unit plan.

Rationale: I will be teaching a drawing class for student teaching and wanted to incorporate something new for students to accomplish.

"This piece is a collection of found objects from a group of classmates. Each object has personal meaning and attachment to the classmates that contributed it to the still life. The differentiation in color from the red LED light to regular light alters the appearance of the color ultimately changing the composition entirely. This change fosters an emotional alteration while viewing this piece as many of the colors that are associated with specific symbols or emotions, are either diminished or what looks like eliminated from the piece. I wanted this piece to be an experiment of how well I knew colors and what I knew about their changes under different light while also discovering the unknown from having my visual awareness lessened."

Literacy Lesson

Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 6 - Reading, Writing, and Oral Communication – The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.

Description: A lesson activity about writing descriptions of works of art.

Rationale: This helps students to accurately describe a work of art throughout everyday experiences and during class critiques. This is interdisciplinary as students identify parts of speech.

Teaching Philosophy

7M: articulates a logical rationale for the role of the visual arts in the school curriculum, including philosophical and social foundations
for visual arts education.

Description/Rationale: I want to incorporate as much student choice within my curriculum, providing artistic decisions for students to utilize in their own rationality. Student choice and involvement in curriculum and community is important. Students will get a sense of diversity, inclusion, equity, and identity within the curriculum as the artists within it reflect the students learning about them. I want to form a safe and secure place for students to come and relax while also coping with any outside difficulties. Art is a great way for students to express their opinions, emotions, or lack thereof, so it needs to be a comforting place, which is my goal. I will continually advocate for the needs of my students to enforce this security within in my classroom and to build trust amongst my students.
